Every house has at list one garage to park a car or two. My house also has one. Today, modern garage is automatic. I can just open my garage right from inside my car. In fact, having this kind of garage is very helpful because I don’t have to be outside my car every time I need to open or close my garage. In the past, I used to have a manual garage. This kind of garage is somewhat wasting my time because I have to open the garage, then take out my car and after that I have to get out my car to close the garage.

Because of the usefulness of the automatic garage, now I don’t have to pass that rush anymore. However, this automatic garage needs more maintenance then manual garage. Sometimes, my garage door just gets stuck and won’t open or close maximally. If that issue happens, I will call a garage door service and repair. Even if the garage door works properly, I routinely call the service to check if anything wrong happens to may garage.

From my experience, having a service like that is worth the money and time. Also, I can always keep my garage door healthy and can function properly. I can imagine if the door just won’t open or close properly. I won’t be able to take out my car or worst, someone can walk pass the unclose garage door.

Can I fix it myself? What’s causing the heating system to smell bad or the foundation to crack? Do I need an air filtration system? Is the new “engineered lumber” as good as conventional wood? These are just a few examples of questions homeowners face when repairs are needed, or when a new house or addition is being planned.

There’s no question that it pays to be an informed consumer. Knowledge of your home’s systems helps you control repair and construction costs and make sure the correct elements are being installed or replaced.

This book uncovers the mysteries behind just about every major appliance and building element in your house. Clear, “exploded” drawings show you exactly how these things should be put together and how they function – what to check if they don’t work, and what you can do that might save you having to call in a professional.

The easy-to-understand pictures and explanations on every page get right to the point, helping you understand how things work, what can go wrong, and how to trouble-shoot a problem.

Virtually everything in your house is included:

Electrical – circuit breakers and grounding, service, outlets, lamps and fixtures.

Heating and Air conditioning – gas, electrical and oil – ductwork and piping, thermostats, central and window AC units, humidifiers and dehumidifiers, and air filtering systems.

Plumbing – kitchen and bath fixtures, piping, water heaters, traps and vents, septic tanks, pumps and water softener systems – even sprinkler systems and swimming pool filters/heaters.

Major household appliances – from kitchen to laundry.

Foundation, framing, doors and windows – including issues like drainage and radon, types of framing and how it supports the house, and all types of doors and windows.

Open The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair (to page 98) and watch your tiling worries dissolve before the simple beauty of photography. Black & Decker has anticipated your every question and problem with interior, exterior, and home systems repairs, and detailed the solutions in just over 500 pages. In no other human endeavor is a visual guide so important as home repair (well, maybe brain surgery), so this is a crucial aid to the handyperson. Easy-to-find sections on floors, insulation, roofing, chimneys, water heaters, wall switches, air conditioning, and much more are well-designed, brilliantly illustrated, and carefully outlined with step-by-step instructions from masters. The photos in particular are extremely valuable, offering many different views (sometimes even exploded) of the operation in question, and always showing just enough to communicate without overwhelming the reader with too much detail. These alone would be worth the price of the book, but the written explanations and instructions are also very helpful, offering tools, materials lists, and hints that wouldn’t occur to the amateur. The book finishes with a maintenance schedule to help you keep repairs from becoming serious, and the end papers have conversion charts and tables that you’ll use time and again. If you can’t have Norm the master carpenter over to help you fix your old house, The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair is the next best thing. –Rob Lightner –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Although it was conceived in 2004, “Not So Big Remodeling” arrives right on cue. Where once we bought houses as savings plans, collecting a tidy profit upon their sale and rolling it over to the next house, we now wonder how to make do. Here is salve for our recession depression. Like the other books in the “Not So Big” series, the quest is to live responsibly, sustainably and meaningfully; make every dollar count. The point to taking this new look at your old house is the possibility of making a big impact with relatively inexpensive changes. Not just a book of ideas, this “Not So” helps readers think like an architect along a room-by-room journey of examination and evaluation. Who couldn’t use a little more comfortable, functional and sustainable nest right about now? Besides, you might be reading this in the house of your dreams. You just don’t know it yet.

Sarah Susanka changed the way we think about home building with her landmark book, The Not So Big House. But not everyone, of course, has the luxury of starting from scratch. So now Susanka and co-author Marc Vassallo are addressing existing homes with Not So Big Remodeling: Tailoring Your Home for the Way You Really Live. The book furthers Susanka’s mission of encouraging people to add character to their homes while getting maximum livability from the square footage.

He shows how to deal with a basement’s special challenges, such as moisture problems and framing against concrete floors and walls, and gives instructions on pumping water up and out from basement baths and laundry rooms.

Most homeowners spend about 20% of their time on the plan and 80% of their time on a messy, traumatic, expensive construction phase. Pros spend 80% of their time on the plan and 20% on a smooth construction phase. But the homeowners can’t know what goes into a solid plan unless someone tells them. This book is based on a simple premise…if homeowners knew even 10% of what the professionals in the construction field know, they could avoid 90% of the problems.

Creating a dream home shouldn’t be a nightmare. Hiring a contractor is an enormous investment and a high-risk endeavor involving decisions that will last forever. This book equips homeowners with the information and strategies needed to turn their vision into a home or a renovation that can be built on time and within budget. Chapters give detailed coverage of critical topics: design; selecting and supervising the architect and contractor; cost estimates; budget; plan specifications; contracts; dealing with town officials; and keeping track of everything along the way. For each stage of the project, there is detailed information on common pitfalls and how to avoid them, as well as insiders’ tips which reveal what most contractors can’t tell you. This book was previously published by Warner Books (2004) and titled What the “Experts” May Not Tell You About Building or Renovating Your Home.
